'Your Utopia' nominated for global top 3 science fiction award

By Lee Kyoung Mi

"Your Utopia," a collection of short stories by author Chung Bora (Bora Chung), is the nation's first work to be nominated for the U.S. Philip K. Dick Award, one of the world's top three honors for science fiction along with the Hugo and Nebula.

The Dick awards' official website on Jan. 10 released the names of the six finalists for this year's honor.

Launched in 1983 to honor the American author Philip K. Dick (1928-82), a leading writer of the 20th century, the annual award is given to an outstanding science-fiction novel published in the U.S. "Your Utopia" is the first work written in Korean by a Korean writer to be nominated.

"Your Utopia" is a revised edition of the short story collection "Meeting Her" (2021) and contains eight tales. The titular story "Your Utopia" is about a smart car carrying a broken android and wandering on a desolate planet devoid of humans due to a pandemic.

Time magazine of the U.S. included the work in its "Books of the Year" list last year. Translated into English by Anton Hur, "Your Utopia" has been published in the U.S., U.K., India and Australia.

The winners will be announced on April 18.
