K-pop took 11 trophies at the 2026 AMAs — and it wasn't just one act.
Okay, I'm just going to say it. I was not okay during this broadcast. I was watching the 2026 American Music Awards livestream and physically could not sit still. By the end of the night I was standing in my room like an idiot with my hands over my mouth. No regrets.
The AMAs opened with something I genuinely didn't expect: an exclusive clip of BTS performing "Hooligan," a track off their fifth studio album Arirang, from their ongoing World Tour in Las Vegas. Right there on primetime American TV, this massive K-pop concert footage playing like it was the most normal thing in the world. Host Queen Latifah hyped it up with "BTS is on their way here tonight," and the crowd was already losing it. That set the tone for the entire evening.
BTS takes Artist of the Year again!
Then came the moment. "Artist of the Year." The biggest award of the night. And when they called BTS, beating out Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga, I think I blacked out for a second.
“Army! We made it once again!” - RM, accepting Artist of the Year
This is their second time winning it, the first being back in 2021, and still the first Korean act to ever take that trophy. What makes it even more remarkable is the timeline: just months after returning from mandatory military service, they're already back on top of American pop culture. RM said he was grateful to ARMY for 13 years of support, and I won't lie, the camera cutting to fans doing the "Korean heart🫰" in the audience absolutely got me.

But BTS was just the beginning.
Huntrix pulls off the night's biggest upset
Here's the thing though. If you asked me before the show which moment would actually surprise me most, I wouldn't have said BTS. The genuinely unexpected story of the night was Huntrix.
If you haven't seen K-pop Demon Hunters on Netflix, the short version is: it's a film with a fictional K-pop girl group called Huntrix (Ijae, Ray Ami, Audrey Nuna), and their song "Golden" has somehow crossed over into real life in the most surreal way possible. It already won the Grammy and the Academy Award for Best Original Song earlier this year. Now it's won Song of the Year at the AMAs, taking down Taylor Swift's "The Fate of Ophelia" and nine other contenders. A fictional group's song is genuinely one of the biggest songs of the year. I still don't fully know how to process that.
Ijae and Ray Ami were there in person and said they "properly sealed the demon gate," which, if you've seen the movie, is very funny. They looked genuinely overwhelmed, and honestly same.

KATSEYE proves they're here to stay
Between award announcements, KATSEYE performed their new song "Pinky Up" live, and it was one of those sets where you could just tell the room shifted. The choreography was sharp, the energy was massive, and the crowd, which clearly included a lot of non-K-pop fans, was into it. This is HYBE and Geffen Records' global girl group, and nights like this are exactly what that collaboration was built for.
They ended up with three awards, including Best New Artist. When KATSEYE gave their speech, they specifically thanked BTS for "inspiring us to share our culture on a global scale," which felt genuinely sincere rather than just something you say. Korean member Yoonjae added a thank-you in Korean, which was a nice touch.

TWICE rounded things out by taking Best Female K-pop Artist, bringing the total to 11 trophies across 51 categories, just over 20%. People magazine and USA Today both called it "K-pop's biggest night," which isn't hyperbole at this point, it's just accurate. This wasn't one artist's night. It was K-pop's.
